Michael at the Milwaukee Public Museum
March 2003

Structure, attention and affection are the keys terms to remember when thinking of Michael. Some other words to remember are reassurance, honest, loveable and smile. Especially his smile, because Michael has a big, bright and bold one.

While Michael is healthy at this point in time, there are some concerns about genetic conditions which he may develop later in life. One being Huntington’s Chorea and the other Achondrosplasia, a form of dwarfism. He is currently attending a special needs program at school where he is working under an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Michael is two grades behind other children his age and it is the opinion of his teacher that this is a result of too many moves in Michael’s life. He is reportedly doing well and occasionally brings home “Student of the Week” awards.

Michael has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and a Learning Disorder (LD). In addition, Michael may have an attachment disorder and Pervasive Development Disorder (PDD). The nature of Michael’s suspected attachment disorder isn’t that he is unable to attach. If anything, Michael seems to be overly affectionate and attaches to others too quickly. He is working with a therapist on a weekly basis and it is the opinion of his adoption worker that Michael would function best if he were the only child in a family or the youngest child by far.

Michael has a favorite stuffed animal, prefers to sleep with a light on and he loves maraschino cherries and pizza. He likes to read books and ride his bike, and Michael also likes pets.
