CHILD OF THE MONTH

Malik & Genis

Case No: LR 5945 & 5947
Birth Date: Malik: 9/17/1996 Genis: 12/01/1994
Creativity is a strength for Malik and he seems to have boundless stores of energy to compliment this talent! He is in good health. Malik struggles with stability in regard to school; however, he has recently completed a day treatment program and is now attending school under and Individual Education Plan (IEP) to address his emotional and behavioral needs. Malik says that he likes science and math and his teachers report that he is very good with numbers. However, he is behind in reading and will need some extra help to catch up to his peers.

Malik is an emotional little boy who can have difficulty dealing with feelings of anger and sadness. He becomes easily frustrated and agitated and will need a lot of strength, compassion and patience from his adoptive family. He will also need structure and consistency in order to work through these characteristics. Malik has days where he is silly and happy, and it would be wonderful if he were able to find a family who could help him have more of those kinds of days.

Currently, Malik is taking medication for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and he has also been diagnosed with Conduct Disorder and Adjustment Disorder. Malik can become physically aggressive with other children and requires a lot of extra supervision. He is very active and some of Malik’s favorite activities include completing crossword puzzles, playing video games, basketball and playing outside. His potential for attachment is unknown at this time.

Genis has a great personality and a wonderful smile. He is very loving and helpful and his teachers and foster mother simply cannot find enough compliments to give Genis.

He is in good health and is not currently taking any medications. Genis has a record of receiving excellent grades, but he has been struggling with his marks of late, a change that is attributed to Genis’ emotional state. He is, however, attending a regular education classroom and he especially likes math, computers and gym class. His teachers indicate that he is a joy to have in class, but they are trying to encourage him to participate more. Genis seems to be very shy and keeps to himself most of the time.

Genis is currently attending therapy sessions to help him deal with his emotional state and also to address his feelings about being adopted. He has expressed nervousness over finding a permanent home and family.

Genis is a very active boy. He loves playing outside, watching movies and playing video games – he’s even eager to help out around the house, too! Genis gets along very well with other children, and he also likes to go camping and fishing. He will need patience and support from his adoptive family in order to feel ready to move and settle in at his new home.

Malik and Genis have three additional siblings who are in the area and who they would like to maintain contact with.
